The most common types of cancer for dogs is lymphoma and mammary gland cancer, while cats tend to suffer from leukemia, according to the Pet Cancer Foundation. Around 60 percent of dogs over the age of 6 will diagnosed with cancer, and the disease accounts for more than half of all pet deaths after the age of 10, the foundation reports.

Another type of cancer found in pets is mesothelioma. This cancer attacks the lining of internal organs. It is usually found in the pleura, which surrounds the lungs. It can also be found in the lining of the heart and abdominal cavity. The cancer is most often caused by exposure to asbestos. Animals are capable of breathing in the dangerous fibers just like humans. Dogs tend to develop the disease more quickly than humans after exposure. Mesothelioma prognosis can be grim if it is not detected early.
Research studies have found that certain breeds of dogs are more susceptible to mesothelioma. Those breeds are Irish setters, German shepherds and Bouvier des Flandres. Male dogs develop the disease more than female dogs.

Just as with humans, a variety of technology and treatment advances has improved the outlook for pet cancer patients. After determining the type, spread and severity of the cancer, veterinarians will use surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation or some combination of treatments.

Pets, however, have been able to assist in the fight against cancer by providing support and comfort to human sufferers of the disease. Trained human and dog, and sometimes cat, partners visit hospitals and rehabilitation centers. Research has shown that interaction with pets can aid recovery by improving patients' mental and physical wellbeing. Petting and interacting with dogs and cats helps reduce blood pressure, triglyceride and cholesterol levels and feelings of loneliness.

Dogs that visit cancer patients usually undergo training to deal with unusual settings, like hospitals, and people who are experiencing stress and may not be themselves. The American Kennel Society offers the Canine Good Citizen certification, and several other pet therapy groups offer workshops, testing and certification.

What is the best dog food?

Many dog owners ask me what would be best to feed their dogs. Of course we all hope it will never happen, but unfortunately pets get hit by cars, they can fight with each other, a bone gets stuck in their throat, and the list goes on. Not only we have accidents, our pets have them, too.
There are ways to prevent a number of accidents, but one can never make everything 100% safe.

The most important thing every pet owner should know is how to provide First Aid for the dog or cat, so that the animal will survive the trip to the veterinarian. No ambulance will come and look after our injured darlings, so we have to be there for them when they need us most.

Animal Connection will run a First Aid for Dogs and Cats Workshop which covers basic First Aid (stopping serious bleedings, learning the vital signs, how to apply CPR, how to recognise shock, etc.)
For more information, please give me a ring or check my website: www.animalconnection.com.au

Dagmar Scherer – Animal Therapist 3298 5036 or 0417 716 907

Workshop - First Aid for Dogs and Cats

As most of my readers know, I am planning a series of workshops.
Now comes the big question - which workshop should I start with?
I decided with the most important one - First Aid for Dogs and Cats.

In my opinion every pet owner needs and wants to know what to do in an emergency.
If your dog or cat gets injured, no ambulance will come and help. So we responsible pet owners need to know what to do, so that we can make it safely and in time to the vet.

I soon realised that pets can get into all sorts of trouble, so my first workshop covers the most common life-threatening situations like choking, serious bleeding, shock, etc. I also include a list what items should be in a good First Aid Kit.

There are two options to run a workshop - with and without handing out a manual. In my workshops you will get a comprehensive manual in case you need to look up things at a later stage (like normal values for body temperature, heart beat, how to do CPR, what to do in case of a fracture, etc.). And of course I will hand out a certificate at the end of the workshop.

Dates and more information about my workshops on my website: http://animalconnection.com.au/index.php/workshops.html

Update on Travis, the koala

The last few weeks were very hectic, but nevertheless I found the time to drive up to the Australian Wildlife Hospital to do my sessions with Travis. Sometimes they experience unpleasant symptoms and think it is not working and therefore discontinue using those methods. Generally, these new symptoms are actually not a new disease, but rather a healing crisis.
What is a healing crisis?
Also known as the "Herxheimer Reaction", this reaction occurs when the body tries to eliminate toxins at a faster rate than they can be properly disposed of. The more toxic the bodily systems are, the more severe the detoxification, or healing crisis. There is a big difference between an illness and a healing crisis. A healing crisis is a sign of improving health. When you encounter a healing crisis after using modalities like massage, acupressure, Australian Bush Flower Essences, etc. it proves that it is working!
The healing crisis is a process in which the body undergoes an intense period of cleansing and rebuilding. It is called a “healing” crisis because the body is healing itself and becoming stronger. It is referred to as a “crisis” because the symptoms can be dramatic and rather unpleasant during this time. Because the healing crisis is accompanied by unpleasant symptoms it is often mistaken as a sickness. In reality, it is just the opposite. It is a process in which the body is overcoming ill health and becoming healthier and stronger.
Toxins, bacteria, and diseased cells are flushed out of the tissues and dumped into the bloodstream to be removed through the body’s channels of eliminations.
Such reactions are temporary and can occur immediately - or within several days, or even several weeks, of a detox. Symptoms usually pass within 1-2 days. If longer, please contact your vet or practitioner.
Often the crisis will come after your pet feels its very best. It can be just that one healing crisis or there may be many small crises to go through.
Symptoms can include:

• Increased joint or muscle pain
• Diarrhoea
• Nausea
• Extreme fatigue and/or its opposite, restlessness
• Cramps, muscle aches and pains
• Arthritic flair up
• Insomnia
• Fever (usually low grade) and/or chills
• Frequent urination and/or urinary tract discharges
• Drop in blood pressure
• Skin eruptions, including: boils, hives, and rashes
• Strong emotions and mood swings
• Anxiety

What can I do to ease my pet’s way through a healing crisis?

Offer plenty of fresh water to flush the body of toxins.

If your pet is feeling fatigued, or sleepy, let it rest.

For more information or to book a free initial assessment call 3298 5036 or 0417 716 907
Dagmar Scherer – Animal Therapist

June 12, 2009 - Article in Newspaper 'Village Pump'

Australian Bush Flower Essences – can I use them for my pets as well?

What are Australian Bush Flower Essences?

Flower Essences are not new. They were already used by the Indigenous Australians as well as by the ancient Egyptians and in the Middle Ages Paracelsus wrote about them, too.

The Australian Bush Flower Essences work on the mind, body and spirit and are obtained by extracting the healing vibrational quality from the flowers. They work as catalysts on an emotional level, harmonizing negative feelings and belief patterns, held in the subconscious mind.

How do the Australian Bush Flower Essences work?

‘Dis-ease’ (not at ease with oneself) is a physical manifestation of emotional imbalances. Each emotion affects a different body part (i.e. in Traditional Chinese Medicine grief is associated with the lungs). Candace Pert, a biological scientist, discovered that hormones are released by the body, when emotions are stimulated. Specific receptor cells take up these hormones, then the emotions can be recognized and expressed, as a result the hormones dissipate.
If an emotion is blocked, ignored or suppressed, the hormones accumulate in the receptor cells. If this process is often repeated, this can lead to disease in a particular area of the body.

The Australian Bush Flower Essences help unblocking these emotions and help therefore prevent the body from developing disease.

The energy of the Australian Bush Flower Essences vibrates at a very high frequency. When an Essence is ingested or absorbed, it enters into the physical body via the mucous membranes, the digestive and nervous system. The energy then goes to the meridians, out to the outer energy layers and then back to the physical body via the chakras and meridians (see the book “Vibrational Medicine” by Richard Gerber MD).

The Australian Bush Flower Essences are as effective when taken by children and animals as they are for adults. In fact, they work exceptionally quickly on children and animals as they do not carry around as many blocks as we adults do, they have fewer emotional barriers and are more in touch with their feelings. Having no side effects, they are very save for pets.

For more information or to book a free initial assessment call 3298 5036 or 0417 716 907

Dagmar Scherer – Animal Therapist

April 3, 2009 Article in Samford Village Pump

Can Acupressure Help My Pet?

Acupressure is an ancient healing art closely related to acupuncture and has been used for thousands of years. Without using needles, it has shown to be accepted very well by animals.

This non-invasive, deceptively gentle treatment can profoundly impact both humans and animals. Dogs are extremely receptive to acupressure as they understand the language of touch.

Traditional Chinese Medicine recognizes the physical body as having a system of pathways of energy called meridians. Whenever the flow of life energy (Qi) is obstructed or is low, the body is more prone to illness. Those energy imbalances can be corrected by pressing certain places on the skin called acupressure points, there are 361 acupressure points located along these meridians.

The main goal of acupressure is to bring the body back into its natural balance and let nature continue its course.

The primary function of acupressure is healing, relaxation, and the continuous flow of energy throughout the body.

For the sceptics – acupressure WORKS! Scientific studies have shown that the stimulation of these specific points causes the release of brain chemicals, endorphins which relieve pain.

Benefits of acupressure:

    * relieves pain
    * relieves stress and tension
    * reduces blood pressure
    * increases energy
    * increases circulation
    * releases natural cortisone to reduce swelling
    * enables the body to relax deeply
    * can help reduce labour pains
    * treats many specific disorders and illnesses (e.g. digestive disorders including diarrhoea and constipation, nausea, neck pain, shoulder and back pain, arthritis, hip dysplasia, joint pain, muscles aches and spasms)
    * builds the dog’s immune system
    * relieves anxiety
    * balances the body
    * enhances mental clarity required for focus in training and performance
    * resolves injuries more readily by removing toxins and increasing blood supply
    * prevents disease

Acupressure does not substitute for veterinary medicine, but is an important avenue of treatment that complements Western Medicine. Well, so do lots of people... But for me, my passion has translated into close attention to what works and what doesn't in helping animals to feel and perform better.

During my lifetime I was lucky to share many years with a lot of dear companions - dogs, cats, birds, fish, horses, rodents and many more.

If I followed my instincts I would be a vet today, but I never could stand the thought of putting an animal down. So I stayed away from that occupational opportunity and instead became a Master of Engineers. I also had a successful career in sales, was the owner of a literacy agency, but I was always searching for real fulfillment. During all those years I never stopped studying whatever I could find about animals. Only in my 40ies I opened my eyes and realized that it was finally time to follow my heart and do what I always wanted to do – working with animals!

First of all I started further studies and became a Remedial Massage Therapist at the Australian Institute for Applied Sciences.

I realized that my connection with animals was always a loving energy connection. They taught me, if you give you receive. And that is basically how energy healing works; it is always an exchange of energies.

Over the time I developed an own method/style to work with an animal, it involves elements of massage, EFT, TTouch, Bowen Technique, Quantum Touch, Acupressure, and Kinesiology.

Due to my continuous studies my method will change (grow) all the time.

Recently I added the Australian Bush Flower Essences to complement my energy work and I have plans to attend an animal communication course.

What is TTouch?

Tellington TTouch is a gentle and powerful method of working with animals without the use of force or fear.
It is a useful tool for dog owners wishing to do anything from building a bond with their new puppy to those training their dog for competition.

The Tellington TTouch™ is a specialised approach to the care and training of our animal companions to complement medical treatments and enhance traditional training methods.

Developed by internationally recognised animal expert, Linda Tellington-Jones, this method can improve performance and health and presents solutions to common behavioural and physical problems. It also helps establish a deeper bond between humans and animals through increased understanding and more effective communication.

The techniques are based on a similar set of body awareness exercises for humans developed by Moshe Feldenkrais; the principle is that the exercises interrupt unacceptable behavior patterns and responses and allow acceptable patterns to develop.

TTouch is a method based on circular movements of the fingers and hands all over the body. The intent of the TTouch is to stimulate the function and vitality of the cells in the body and to activate unused neural pathways to the brain.

Using a combination of specific touches, lifts, and movement exercises, TTouch helps to release tension and increase body awareness. This allows the animal to be handled without provoking typical fear responses. The animal can then more easily learn new and more appropriate behaviors. By using the TTouch and a variety of other tools, like the Flower Essences, EFT and acupressure, the animal is supported in experiencing self-confidence in previously frightening situations. Even the most difficult problems are often eliminated.

Benefits of TTouch

This gentle method is currently being used by animal owners, trainers, breeders, veterinarians, zoo personnel and shelter workers in several countries.

Benefits of TTouch include:

• reduction of stress
• improved concentration
• increase in self confidence and self control
• improved co-ordination, balance & athletic ability
• can be beneficial therapy in addition to medical treatment
to ease discomfort caused by some physical injuries or conditions (arthritis, skin problems, hip dysplasia)
• reduction of tension
• unwanted behaviour modification
• increase of trust
• reduction of aggressiveness
• improved performance
• improved health
• enhanced life quality of your pet

TTouch can help in cases of:

• excessive barking and chewing
• leash pulling
• jumping up
• aggressive behaviour
• extreme fear and shyness
• resistance to grooming
• excitability and nervousness
• car sickness
• problems associated with aging

What is Quantum Touch?

Quantum physics has acknowledged that we and everything around us are made up of energy, even our thoughts and emotions are energy.
Unseen life-force energy (known as "chi" to Chinese, "prana" to Indian yogis, "Ki" to Japanese or "Mana" to Hawaiian Kahunas), like gravity and the air we breath is very real, after all we do not need to see these things to know that they are around us.

Everything vibrates. When two things vibrate at different frequencies, there is a tendency for the vibrations to come together. Most often, the slower vibration will rise to match the faster frequency.

Example 1: over time, similarly tuned electric oscillators will match frequencies

Example 2: disembodied animal hearts when placed near each other and kept alive in a lab will all beat in unison

Example 3: when women share a dormitory, over months they will often start menstruating at the same time

Generally people or animals who are in need of healing hold a low vibration.

A Quantum Touch practitioner will raise his or her own vibration to a high level and place her hands on the client. As the practitioner is holding her own vibration at a high level all the time, the client's vibration will raise and eventually match the vibration of the practitioner. As soon as the vibrational frequency of the life-force energy raises, the body starts healing itself.
So the healing is actually a self-healing, the client's body heals itself, with the assistance of the practitioner.

Quantum Touch is a completely safe and noninvasive powerful hands-on healing technique with amazing results. Quite often one can watch bones, muscles and ligaments move into proper position without any force applied.

Many professional practitioners of various modalities like chiropractors, osteopaths, physical therapists, acupuncturists, cranial sacral therapists, chi gung instructors and reiki masters combine Quantum Touch with their practice.

Benefits of Quantum Touch

Over the years, Quantum-Touch has shown itself to be highly useful in organic and systemic conditions, conditions involving musculoskeletal problems, and trauma, pain, and inflammation due to injury or surgery. Overall, the process tends to substantially accelerate the healing process.
Quantum Touch can actually help heal almost any ailment, here some examples:

• Relieves back or neck problems
• Reduces pain
• Reduces inflammation
• Beneficial for immune disorders
• Helps with arthritis
• Injuries heal much faster
• permanent limps often disappear completely
• various cancers have been treated with tremendous success
• accelerates recovery time
• relieves side effects of certain treatments
• boosts the immune system
• gives a sense of wellbeing

Distant healing sessions are also available for those who live too far away or are unable to travel. It is a gentle non-invasive muscle release technique that balances and stimulates energy flows in the body.

This technique strives to find the origin of a problem rather than the symptoms and has consistently shown it can have profound and permanent healing and pain relief outcomes.

It balances the physical, mental and emotional planes. The term "pressure" is misleading, since acupressure actually uses a very light touch.

The purpose of acupressure is to stimulate the body's own recuperative powers by stimulating the various points. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the qi (the lifeforce energy) travels along the meridians. The stimulation removes energy blockages by diffusing the toxic build up that accumulates and therefore causes all sorts of complaints.

It IS a science, and there is nothing supernatural or magical about acupressure. Western scientists have proven the existence of acupoints using electrical devices.

Benefits of acupressure

The main goal of acupressure is to bring the body back into its natural balance and let nature continue its course.
The primary function of acupressure is healing, relaxation, and the continuous flow of energy throughout the body.

Benefits of acupressure:

Each emotion affects a different body part (i.e. in TCM grief is associated with the lungs). Candace Pert, a biological scientist, discovered that hormones are released by the body, when emotions are stimulated. Specific receptor cells take up those hormones, then the emotions can be recognized and expressed, as a result the hormones dissipate.
If an emotion is blocked, ignored or suppressed, the hormones accumulate in the receptor cells. If this process is often repeated, this can lead to disease in a particular area of the body.

The ABFE help unblocking these emotions and help therefore prevent the body from developing disease.

The energy of the ABFE vibrates at a very high frequency. When an Essence is ingested or absorbed, it enters into the physical body via the mucuous membranes, the digestive and nervous system. The energy then goes to the meridians, out to the outer energy layers and then back to the physical body via the chakras and meridians (see the book “Vibrational Medicine” by Richard Gerber MD).

The ABFE are as effective when taken by children and animals as they are for adults. In fact, they work exceptionally quickly on children and animals as they don’t carry around as much baggage as we adults do, they have fewer emotional barriers and are more in touch with their feelings.
<img width='1' height='1'
